CD review "Beyond The Time"

CD tips Vocal jazz (1): Elena Poletti & Band

Sooner or later every jazz singer makes one: a CD with the standards. The Italian Elena Poletti, who chooses to live in the Black Forest, draws immediately from the entirety of the Great American Songbook for her first CD. She interprets songs like Cole Porter's "Love for sale", George Gershwin's "I loves you, Porgy" or Benny Golson's "Whisper not", all of which are classics. And the often heard pieces one gladly hears another time from her. Poletti's warm, round, alto voice is as if especially made for the slower pieces which are comprised of long, drawn-out syllables, which she can put in a vibrating feeling. The band, with Tilman Günther (piano), Jean-Luc Miotti (contrabass) and Frank Bockius (drums) contributes its part to the great melodic nature of this CD. And as an encore to the American standards, Poletti sings two songs of the great Brazilian composer Antonio Carlos Jobim and a song from the Italian composer Bruno Martino.
